PhotoDialer for Palm Pre Case Study
THE OPPORTUNITY
Cardinal Peak was involved in developing applications for the Palm Pre well before the product's launch. Once the product launched, we saw the opportunity to showcase our expertise on this platform by building one of the first commercially viable applications. Fortunately, with Palm Pre's revolutionary webOS operating system, developing rich, powerful applications is simple.
THE CHALLENGE
We love the Palm Pre here at Cardinal Peak. This new device is based on a full, multi-tasking operating system. It has a bright, dynamic display with multi-touch gesture support, and a slide-out keyboard.
One challenge with the Palm Pre, however, is that it isn't easy to dial a phone number without sliding open the device's keyboard. We evisioned a way to quickly dial our most commonly used phone numbers without opening the keyboard. The result was PhotoDialer, the simplest way to call the people you talk to the most—just by tapping their picture.
THE SOLUTION
Cardinal Peak was able to develop PhotoDialer very quickly, using Palm's Mojo™ software development kit. We went from sketching the basic idea on a whiteboard to having the completed application submitted to the Palm Pre App Catalog in about two weeks' time.

As an embedded software engineer, I spent the majority of my time writing code in C and C++. One somewhat-justified knock on these languages is that they both force the programmer to sweat all the details involved with memory management.
One particular bugaboo of the C/C++ engineer is the memory leak: Memory that is dynamically allocated [...]
