From Fortune 500 leaders to innovative startup organizations, Cardinal Peak has successfully collaborated with scores of companies on hundreds of products requiring the highest levels of AWS IoT engineering and support expertise. The projects below showcase our product design services leveraging AWS, AWS IoT Core, AWS Kinesis Video and Alexa Voice Services.
To help our client — a leading life sciences instruments, software and services company — address laboratory efficiency and productivity-related challenges, we designed and developed a cloud-based laboratory instrument management system using Amazon Web Services.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art management system to connect lab instruments via AWS IoT Core, our solution minimizes instrument downtime, improves laboratory workflows and reduces the IT burden on laboratory managers, enabling our client to deliver the lab of the future.
Our client offers unified smart home systems and wanted to add Alexa voice capabilities to their control tablet for improved user experience. As an Alexa Voice Services (AVS) design partner and Voice Interoperability Initiative member, Cardinal Peak provided services focused on the system’s audio path, embedded software and AVS integration. Our engineers provided the deep audio and DSP expertise to ensure the product performs well in the real world, from anywhere in the house and accounting for background noise.
Dr. Randall W. Porter, a neurosurgeon in Phoenix, AZ, created Medical Memory, after his father was diagnosed with cancer. His father lived in Chicago and Dr. Porter experienced the challenges and frustrations of having to rely on family members to accurately recite complex information about his father’s condition and treatment. The experience had a profound effect on Dr. Porter’s approach to patient communication in his own practice and ultimately would change patient engagement across health care.
Yonder is a music streaming service like Spotify but instead of a subscription it comes bundled with mobile devices and plans. They wanted a social-first app based around activity feeds, followers and recommendations. Cardinal Peak developed a custom solution for both Android and iOS that kept music data encrypted and secure when stored locally for offline playback. In the AWS cloud, we used S3 encryption at rest, token-based authentication and HTTPS streaming to deliver music to the devices. The system scaled with AWS EC2 auto scaling, AWS S3 and a distributed noSQL database cluster. Yonder Music was launched in Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh, and at peak times, handled traffic for many thousands of simultaneous users, streaming music from a database of over 10 million songs.
It used to be that storing and retrieving vast amounts of video data was quite challenging, but today tools enable the easy collection, processing and analysis of video and data streams in real time. Amazon Kinesis is a cost-effective way to simplify video and audio data storage with scalability and flexibility for unique applications. Our engineer tells of an early project involving thousands of video cameras that required 10 engineers and encountered significant challenges due to the large file size and difficult playback and retrieval. Then recently he developed a similar solution, managing streams for 14,000 cameras. With Kinesis, he was able to deliver the solution easily, as a one-person team. With Kinesis, every camera was able to run the software and send the stream to Kinesis, with 100% availability, 100% storage and no issues.
Ayla Networks offers an IoT platform built on AWS with components like Wi-Fi radios and cloud APIs that allow manufacturers to launch IoT products with limited in-house experience. Cardinal Peak provides embedded product design, end-user app development and testing for Ayla customers.

A laboratory instrument manufacturer wanted to offload image analysis and storage to AWS to reduce costs and provide their customers with faster results. Cardinal Peak developed a multi-tenant cloud data storage and processing system in AWS cloud. Lab instruments stream data to S3. Access is through a web application deployed on CloudFront, Lambda and API Gateway. Processing jobs are executed on autoscaling EC2 clusters. The system stores its data on RDS and S3. By implementing the API in a serverless fashion and separating it from the processing backend, the computationally intensive portion can scale on EC2 without limits. The project accelerates customers’ ability to process their data, while reducing IT burden. The client continues to partner with Cardinal Peak to deliver more advanced image analysis by implementing AI and machine learning in the processing pipeline.
For a first in its category, this earbud platform works with any virtual assistance (Alexa, ok Google, Siri) and allows brands to customize their wake-words. Cardinal Peak is providing complete end-to-end design services from advanced research for things that have never been done before through all aspects of product design including hardware, embedded software and mobile application development. The major challenge of the project is having always-listening earbuds that are listening for many potential wake-up words while minimizing the battery usage. Being an Alexa Voice Services design partner allows us to combine the most innovative components available for this new product category.
